Can we really bounce back and forth on the interpretations of the book of Revelation and grasp what God is trying to tell us? Did God lie when he had John write Revelation 1:3 — “Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it …” Is God playing some sort of game with us?

So now I’m confused. How about you?

Hello. I’m Ken Wright the minister of the Church of Christ in New Iberia, Louisiana. Welcome to In Light of the Word.

Are we REALLY supposed to believe those folks who jump all over place and play theological gymnastics in their approach to interpreting the book of Revelation?

If that’s the case, we will never receive the blessing God promised in verse 3 of chapter one, because we can never know anything for sure…

So how do we go about interpreting those fantastic images in the book of Revelation?

Now put yourself in the place of a first century person sitting in the audience of a church gathering and someone is reading Revelation 13. All of a sudden – He starts interpreting it for you with terms like Hitler, the Pope of Rome, The United Nations, Communist, The Federal Reserve Bank, and so on. Remember, you’ve never heard these words before – so to you – he’s speaking JIBBERISH!

Today we’re going to continue with our introductory study of the Book of the Revelation.

We’re goin to ask, “Can the imagery of the Book of Revelation ever mean something that the first century reader could not related to or understand?”

I Saw Heaven Open – Lesson Three

I Saw Heaven Open - Lesson ThreeThis morning I want you to put yourself in the place of a first century Christian living somewhere in Asia.

Hello, I’m Kenneth Wright the minister of the Church of Christ in New Iberia, Louisiana. Welcome to In Light of the Word.

Just imagine that one evening someone bangs on your door one and says, “COME ON! We’ve all got to get together tonight,” and you ask, “WHY?”

The answer shocks you. “Because we’ve just received a letter from God.”

This is exactly what happened to the members of seven different congregations in the First Century.

It’s a lengthy letter sent by the last remaining Apostle of Christ. He’s a man who is suffering, just as you. A man in exile on the ragged little island called Patmos. A man who actually knew Jesus and he sat at his feet.

He saw the Lord die. But he also saw the empty tomb. Remarkably, he sat, ate, walked, and talked with the resurrected Savior. He did this all the way up until he himself saw the Savior ascend into heaven.

And now, this beloved Apostle has sent a letter to your little gathering of Christians — a letter from the Lord Himself.

This – is the letter we call “The Book of the Revelation.

I know your curious, so go get your Bible and study along with me as we explore the first chapter of the wonderful book — In Light f the Word.

In Revelation 1:9 we read:

“I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering, and kingdom, and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus; was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.”

Hello. I’m Kenneth Wright, the minister of the Church of Christ in New Iberia, Louisiana. Welcome to In Light of the Word.

Here in the beginning of the Book of  Revelation, John has revealed a timeless truth, and he does it so subtly that those of us who are 2000 years removed from the original people and language, may miss it.

It’s a truth that those in the first century needed to hear. But also, a truth that we today, some 2000 years removed from the events of long ago, need not only to hear, but grasp the concept.

There is so much controversy over the imagery in the Revelation that a person doesn’t know what to believe.

So, go get your Bible and study along with me as explore the Biblical principles and imagery found in this wonderful letter from God – In Light of the Word.

It’s Sunday and an exile by the name of John is worshipping. Suddenly, he hears a voice like a trumpet behind him, and the voice tells him to  “Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.”

Hello, I’m Ken Wright the minister of the church of Christ in New Iberia, Louisiana. Welcome to In Light of the Word.

The idea of repetition is found all throughout the Bible. Amos 1:3 – “For three sins of Damascus, even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. In verse 6 he writes, “For three sins of Gaza, even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. In verse 9 he writes, “For three sins of Tyre, even for four, I will not turn back my wrath.

Over and over again in the Bible you’ll find repetition, and the repetition is to emphasize a point. It’s like driving a nail into a board with a hammer. You have to hit it several times to get it home, and that’s what God does all through out the Bible. And we find this done over and over in the book of The Revelation.

John me today as we take an opening look at the first of eight scenes in the Revelation and look a message firm God – In Light of the Word.

In the first century Smryna is a wealthy, commercial trade center, located on a deep harbor of the Aegean Sea. Smyrna competed with Ephesus and Pergamum for the title “First City of Asia.”

Hello I’m Ken Wright the Minister of the church of Christ in New Iberia, Louisiana and Welcome to In Light of the Word.

Today we look at the second letter to the seven churches in Asia. It’s addressed to the little, struggling congregation in the city of Smyrna.

The Lord tells its members that even though they are struggling, even though they are hurting, and even though some of them are going to die, nothing on this planet is worth sacrificing you allegiance to God. He says that their faith in him should be unmovable, and total, even in the face of such trials.

Why? Because He is the first and the last, the one who dies and came to life again.

So What does that mean? Go get your bibles and study along with me as we explore the impact of trusting the Lord in time of trouble and heartache – In Light of the Word.

I know you’ve heard about all the bailouts, stimulus packages, subsidizing loosing companies, and give-away programs being conducted by our federal government over the last few years, and it seems like the Feds have a solution for everything doesn’t it? NOT! 2000 years ago the Romans tried the same thing. They had a solution for every problem. But, in case you haven’t noticed, The Roman Empire no longer exists.

Hello. I’m Kenneth Wright, the minister of the Church    of Christ in New Iberia, Louisiana. Welcome to In Light of the Word.

Today, were going to look the  church in Pergamum. This city was the Washington D.C. of the Roman Empire. The politicians thought they could legislate solutions for every problem. However, every solution brought new problems.

This is the world situation in which we find church in the city of Pergamum. Some Christians were trying to balance their faith and service to Christ, while at the same time, compromising with the world. Bad idea.

So, go get your bible and study along with me as we learn about how Satan’s Throne can (and does) effect the Christians of Pergamum, and how it still happens today – In Light of the Word.

Hello. I’m Kenneth Wright, the minister of the Church    of Christ in New Iberia, Louisiana. Welcome to In Light of the Word.

Today, we will look at the fourth church of the seventh churches in the Book of Revelation.

(Revelation 2:18-19)

18 “To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze. 19 I Know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.

This letter gave encouragement to the church of Thyatira to persevere in their witnessing Christ as the real Son of God. Let’s now come together to understand the circumstances of this church that necessitated so much attention of Jesus. This is the only time in the Book of Revelation Christ is referred to as the Son of God.

So, go get your bible and study along with me. Welcome to In Light of the Word.

I Saw Heaven Open – Lesson Nine

I Saw Heaven Open - Lesson NineMany people ridicule it; many people fear it; and far too many people are confused about it. Words like “the coming apocalypse”, “anarchy upon the Earth”, “devastation from above”, all these things tend to cast fear into the minds and hearts of those who pick up the book and read it. But Jesus says, “Blessed are the ones who read these words of this prophecy and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near”.

Hello, I’m Ken Wright, the minister of the church of Christ in New Iberia, Louisiana. I want to invite you to stay with us tonight as we strip away the confusion and concern that you may have concerning the Book of Revelation.   In Light of the Word.
